Fix it first, or sell it as it is?
Compare the repair quote with what the repair adds. A working iPhone 15 Pro Max goes for $390–$560; a damaged one for $220–$335. That's roughly $195 between the middles of the two ranges. If a trusted shop will fix it for clearly less than that, repairing first can pay. If not, sell it as it is: the buyer prices in the repair, and you skip the risk of a repair that goes wrong.

How to sell a broken phone for the most money
- 01
If it turns on
Back it up, sign out of your Apple Account or Google account, and erase it. Signing out turns off Activation Lock, which is worth a lot: a locked phone only sells for parts.
- 02
If it won’t turn on
You can still remove the lock: on iCloud.com, open Find Devices, pick the phone and remove it from your account. For Android, remove the device under Security in your Google account.
- 03
Describe the damage exactly
Front or back glass, cameras, water damage, battery health, and whether Face ID or Touch ID works. Buyers pay more when nothing is a surprise.
- 04
Photograph every flaw
Good light, every crack and scratch, and the screen on if it lights up. Include the IMEI (dial *#06#, or it’s on the SIM tray).

Common questions
- Can I sell a phone with a cracked screen?
- Yes. Cracked phones sell every day, mostly to repair shops and people who fix phones themselves. List it as damaged, say exactly what’s cracked, and price it from the damaged range for your model.
- Can I sell a phone that won’t turn on?
- Yes, as parts only. Boards, screens, cameras and frames still have value. Remove it from your Apple or Google account online first if you can, because an unlocked dead phone is worth more than a locked one.
- Can I sell an iCloud-locked phone?
- Only for parts, and only if it’s yours. Nobody but Apple can remove Activation Lock, and Apple only does it for the owner with proof of purchase. Phones reported lost or stolen can’t be listed: every IMEI is checked before a listing goes live.
- Should I fix my phone before selling it?
- Only if the repair costs clearly less than the difference between its working and damaged value, and you trust the shop. Otherwise sell it as it is: the buyer prices the repair in, and you skip the risk.
- How much is a broken phone worth?
- For most models in our price guide, a cracked or damaged phone that can still be repaired sells for 40–55% of a working one. One that only works for parts is worth less. The price guide shows the damaged and parts-only range for every model.
